Tie Dye Creations!

Summer Camp 60’s theme
Age Group: School Age 6-12 years old
For our 60’s theme week teachers will need to learn how to tie dye t-shirts so that they can teach their students.  Students will learn how colors interact with cotton and how color hues change when they dry. This is a two day lesson
Materials needed:
 Table cloth or news paper
Buckets or large plastic containers that hold at least 4 quarts
I large container with Soapy water
At least 2 different colors of fabric dye, the more colors the better
Soda Ash
Salt (1 cup per dye water)
100% cotton t-shirts
Rubber bands and marbles
Spray bottles
Squeeze bottles
1 gallon zip lock bags
Latex gloves- powder free are best
Dyeing area
Cover an area (table) with table cloth or newspapers.  Have soapy water nearby for students to wash their hands after dyeing. Set up dye tubs and dissolve dyes in water. Follow the dye instructions. Add the salt to the dye as it helps to set the dyes color. Prepare tub with soda ash. Soda ash is a great bonding agent that aides in the dyes sticking more cohesively and produces more vivid colors to the fabric. Have marbles, squeeze bottles, and spray bottles mixed and ready to go.

Get the t-shirts ready
Soak the shirts in water. Soak shirts in soda ash solution for 15-20 minutes. Then wring them out and twist the rubber bands around the shirts
Dye the shirts
Soaks sections on each of the shirts in different dyes or you may also use the dye solutions in the spray and squeeze bottles to spray or squeeze dyes onto the shirts. Place each shirt in a zip lock bag and seal. Shirts will sit overnight. Finally, Rinse, Wash, remove rubber bands and hang shirts. After shirts dry have students model their work.

Discussion- Discuss with the students how the process worked and what the results were. Have students discuss and comment on each other’s shirts. Quiz students on each of the ingredients used and how each one worked to produce the outcome.
